🚗 How Wayne Lensing Built One of the Midwest’s Most Fascinating Auto Collections

In the heart of Las Vegas, tucked inside the Imperial Palace Casino, once stood a legendary museum known as The Auto Collections. Opened in 1981 by casino mogul Ralph Engelstad, the collection boasted one-of-a-kind vehicles—some owned by world leaders and historical icons like Franklin D. Roosevelt, Al Capone, and Adolf Hitler. Valued at over $100 million, it was a magnet for car lovers and history buffs alike, attracting millions over its 36-year run.

Among the awe-struck visitors who walked those polished floors was a young man named Wayne Lensing.

Wayne wasn’t just a tourist—he was a dreamer. As he gazed at the collection, he imagined what it would be like to have just one of those remarkable cars in his own garage. Though the price tags were far out of reach, his passion was ignited.

Over time, Wayne built a friendship with the museum’s staff. They bonded over their shared love for rare vehicles and the challenges of running a museum—keeping collections alive, engaging the public, and preserving history.

Then, in the late 1990s, Wayne received an unexpected call: Ralph was in declining health and looking to part with a few prized vehicles. He offered Wayne the chance to purchase pieces from the collection—an honor that Wayne took to heart.

In 2000, Wayne made his first acquisitions:

• A car once owned by Emperor Hirohito of Japan

• A vehicle associated with the King of Siam

Fueled by this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, Wayne approached the bank with a bold vision: to open his own museum. With financial support and a solid plan, the fi

rst building went up, and the Lensing Auto Collection was born.

But Wayne didn’t stop there.

By 2001, just as his museum doors were opening, he acquired even more remarkable vehicles from the Vegas collection:

  Benito Mussolini’s parade car

• A 1938 Cadillac used by FDR

• The Kennedy follow-up car

These acquisitions laid the foundation for what would become one of the most unique and historic museums in the Midwest.

Today, that same dream—sparked in Las Vegas decades ago—lives on as Historic Attractions Museum in Roscoe, Illinois. Now occupying over 86,000 square feet, the museum features:

• One of the largest John F. Kennedy collections in the country
